I’ll be honest. It was tough writing this month’s newsletter, with the way the
world is at the moment. Seeing sad scenes on the news. I don’t want to be
frivolous with my newsletter, but life has to go on…

I hope it gives you a few minutes of distraction. And hopefully, you’ll find some of it useful.

A few weeks ago, I was designing a logo as part of a branding project for a
client. Picture the scene… I’d been sitting at my desk all day long when I started
to doubt myself and my work. You may know the feeling. When you’ve been at your desk most of the day working without moving. Not good. Then you send
the work over to the clients and wait for the reply… imposter syndrome kicks in.
I call my friend for reassurance. Then I get the email from the client… Ta da!
β€œThank you Ange for your brilliance!” Phew! Panic over. So, the moral of the
story is believe in your work. You worked hard, it’s your brilliance to claim. Kick
that imposter out!

As for picking this font for the month, I chose it because I liked the graphics and
how it was presented over on Instagram. It reminded me of summer, all bright
and colourful. You know me, I love bright colours. They make me happy. And we
all need some happiness, especially now.

August’s Font Love Friday is Nave.

The Nave typeface is designed by Jamie Clarke. Just look at these posters showing the different weights it comes in. Jamie says: β€œIts characters are framed by a formal, rigid outer shape, revealing an unexpected twist: a flowing, sensuous inner form. This unique combination ensures that Nave stands out in any design, adding a touch of elegance and flair to every project.”

Back to school
With the new term upon us any day now…how about some learning? Maybe it’s time to create your own typeface or learn about typography production? Courses are presented by specialists within the I Love Typography platform. Take a look here.  

Handwritten with love
Later this month, I’m going to a brush calligraphy workshop held by my freelance pal letter designer Julia in association with Being Freelance. I can’t wait to brush up on my skills… get it..? Ha…anyway if you’re part of the BF community, sign up. I’ll share my results next time.

Speaking of which…! I always think of cleaning when I say this name… anyway, check out their very reasonably priced courses. Domestika always has a sale, right now lots of courses are 99p. If they’ve gone up by the time you read this just try checking again in a few weeks. Grab a bargain on learning about typography.

FREELANCING

Digital Women
This month I’ve had the honour of judging some categories for the Digital Women Awards. It was amazing to see so many great entries and, in a few weeks, I get to be with some of the finalists. On the September 18th the awards are also a conference day of learning and celebrating women in digital. Tickets are still available up until the 1st of September. Maybe see you there?

Up your street?
I’m part of the International Magazine Centre community. On September 26th the wonderful Nikki is hosting Magazine Street. The event’s in Edinburgh, Scotland. Nikki and the team have a day of speakers, each talking about magazines. One will be launched and produced on the day. How cool is that?? I’ll be one of the speakers. Yeah I slid that in there…all casual… I’ll be talking about freelancing and design life. Find more and get tickets here.

Umbrella ella ella ella
Have you ever used an umbrella company to get paid for a contract? Before I go any further, just to be clear I am NOT giving professional advice. This next bit is just based on my own research. So do yours too!

I’m about to work on a new contract and I have been asked to go via an umbrella company even, though Lyons Creative is a Limited company. I’ve never used one and it seems bizarre that I’m paying a company to look after my taxes and they’re employing me. Argh the dreaded IR35! If you’re about to use an umbrella company, do your research because there are hundreds out there. I found this article on the IPSE website and I looked up company reviews on Trust Pilot. But my top tip is to ask for the highest day rate possible, as you’ll be paying the umbrella company a cut of your invoice.

Slurp it up
Load the ColorSlurp! This app’s been around for a while, but I’ve only just come across it. Similar to coolrs, it’s a colour generator tool. They say β€œColorSlurp is the ultimate colour productivity booster for designers and developers.” It has a high star rating; you can load an image and pick the colours on screen. BOOM! You’ve created your own palette! It also has an array of ready-made palettes for you to choose from.

Just because…
This magazine cover caught my eye, by photographer Dina Litovsky. Reading a little more into it, the 15-year-old Heman Bekele has been named β€˜Time Magazine’s Kid of the Year’. He’s on his way to inventing a soap that could help treat cancer patients. I found it interesting as the photographer could have shown a bar of soap but instead used a soap bubble. Heman looks as if the bubble is just within reach, like his invention. Great concept and use of colours.

#FONTLOVEFRIDAY

While lots of people have been taking far-flung holidays (I’m not jealous… honest) I’ve been doing daytrips. I spotted this in the wild whilst visiting a friend in Arundel, UK. I love the fonts on it. I said hi to the decorator, who was lovely to chat to. I complimented her branding and said I love the colours. I bet she paints really well too!

P.S. The pic of me in the header might seem random, but this was a very happy day for me. I was cycling through the streets of London with a few other 1000 odd cyclists at the annual Black Unity Bike Ride.
