First off thank you to the people who messaged me after the last newsletter – greatly appreciated. If you’re new here, welcome. To my regulars, hello and welcome back for this month’s round up of fonts, designery things and freelancing.

Did everyone wake up in February? It’s been quite a month – some new enquiries and a couple of new projects (mainly from LinkedIn…it works!). One project included graphics for social media. The client is very professional and appeals to corporates. But we all know “corporate” doesn’t have to mean boring! Look at Google’s logo for example. They’re in the business to make money, but their logo is soft and has the added elements of bright colours. Let’s also not forget your logo doesn’t necessarily need icons or other elements. You can use text only. Look at mine for example. So, going back to the client’s requirements I chose this font as a classy but approachable option:

Now, don’t bother trying to Google that name to find it…you can imagine what results will pop up! I found it on the ever-useful Envato website. The creator of this serif font says: “It was made with the intention to be used for your personal branding. But, this works well for many applications. Everything from personal branding, logos, name tags, handwritten quotes, product packaging, merchandise, social media & greeting cards.”

Phew! That’s me covered then! I really love the dips in the lowercase “i” and the curly circular serifs. How about you? Let me know if you like it.

Monotype is putting on an hour-long event with talks from the authors of the Type Trends 2024 report. It’s on March 21st and will give you a global view of type trends from around the world. Save your spot here.

Geek out with colour
This blog has useful explanations on colour. Inside are more links to free online colour generators. Always worth a look, especially if you’re designing graphics for online use. One of the links led me to these hex colours, created using very imaginative names. Not Yo Cheese 😂

Pictures for the people
A bit like Wikipedia, the image collection picryl.com is in the Public Domain.  If you’re researching something historical, you can find images here. As always do check any further usage and copyright as we don’t want any nasties turning up in our inbox, telling us off for using something without permission.

FREELANCING

GDPR ARRRRARGHHH Why should you bother?
Speaking of which… if you’re a business owner or freelancer (yes, you are still running a business) based in the UK, do you have a GDPR policy? I was speaking to someone recently and they mentioned a client of theirs had been fined for not having a policy in place. Yes, really. I know it all sounds boring but even if you collect a client’s email, that’s data.
Look at the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) - it’s easy to set up and cheaper if you pay by direct debit. Get yourself covered.

Outside of the ICO if you want a 1:1, speak with Christina who’s a GDPR specialist for anyone needing extra support.

“When I open up LinkedIn, you’re there!”
Two different friends said this to me this month. Hilarious, but I only post three times a week! The magic happens when you comment or reply to a comment on another person’s post. This was one of the tips I learnt on the LinkedIn for Humans course by Sophie from Freelancer Magazine. Clients are lurking there. It’s not just about gaining clients direct though - it’s great for your marketing and networking. After commenting on a few posts, I’ve been invited to speak on two podcasts!
