Hello and welcome!

This month’s newsletter is a short one…. “Phew!” I hear you cry ha ha! I know,
short isn’t my usual style but I’ve been out and about this month. Time’s caught
up with me.

I was at the Information is Beautiful seminar at the Royal Institute in London recently. You might remember me mentioning it before. It did not disappoint! An evening listing to David McCandless, who creates insightful and beautiful infographics. He must have so much patience to look for the data, and so much skill to create the designs and make the information look so beautiful. I love infographics. I got to meet him after, and he signed my book which I’ve had for years.

At the end of the seminar, walking home with my friend I said, “I’m writing my newsletter and I have no font of the month yet!” She suggested I use what I just saw, the typeface that’s used in the book and presentations. Genius! It’s Quicksand:

It’s available in various weights from light to bold. Quicksand is a sans serif font with rounded ends. My favourite characters are the upper-case Q and the lower case i. It looks clean and simple because the typeface was designed based on geometric shapes.

Originally designed as display font (for headings and pull quotes), it was later developed to be used smaller, like for body copy and books. Another thing I like about Quicksand is that it comes with a glyph set that covers most language accents. It’s available free on Google and Adobe fonts.

Information is Beautiful – it really is. Taking dry data (sorry if we have any data analysts here) and turning it into something pretty is a skill. As well as the books there’s website please take a look. Check out this one on plastics. Quite shocking.

See, I said it was a short one!

If you’re on social media you probably saw all the pics from the small business conference, Atomicon. It was my second time there.

It’s not just a one-day event in Newcastle. There’s a Facebook group and throughout the year you can attend Masterminds with the organisers Andrew and Pete. In the lead up to the big day there are “round table” talks which are a great way to meet people before the in-person event. I went to one on how to use video to promote your business and another on podcasting. All included in the ticket price. So is lunch, snacks and coffee on the day as well as a pre-party. So there’s loads of time for networking!

I went last year too, and I’ve already booked my ticket again for 2025. I go to learn, have fun with my friends, and meet new people. The networking is a brilliant part of it. Don’t worry, it’s really relaxed. Not at all stuffy. I had great conversations and who knows what collaborations they could lead to. The price goes up at midnight tonight.
