Hello and welcome!

If you know me, you’ll know I’m forever learning and trying to improve how I work and run my business. I recently looked at a design group and the flagship course was called Bonfire. I thought, why on earth would they call it that? To me a bonfire is what you chuck all your junk onto. Or the ‘penny for the guy’ (are you old enough to remember that?)

Then I was researching neon signs and came across an article about ‘God’s Own Junkyard’. They create the most amazing bespoke neon signs. But over the years they’ve had more and more visitors thinking they’re an adult only venue! *ahem*… talk about being misinterpreted!

I do love a neon sign. In fact, I’m just finishing a blog about the fun and inspirational signs (some may say cheesy) you find in photo libraries.

So let’s have an array of Neon signs for font of the month:

I used Adobe fonts and Envato to find a selection you can use and adapt in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

If you don’t have those programmes, try Canva. Er yeah… I know. I’m a designer, I’m meant to hate on Canva. But its free! And it’s easy to turn a typeface into a bright neon font. Another option is to check the templates and adapt one to what you need.

If you’re ever in Walthamstow (and you should definitely visit) head to God’s Own Junkyard. Some of their signs have ended up in movies.

Type casting
Have you ever thought about fonts on films and how they choose them? I have, obviously. I think it’s really cool when they manage to capture the period or vibe. There’s a YouTube film called ‘Why Movie Fonts Matter’ It’s a cool watch, created by type designer Marie Boulanger with the opening by Martin Scorsese, which he recorded for a Squarespace promotion. Grab the popcorn, it’s only 14 mins long.

Have a look here at 1001 fonts - Movie Fonts. Clearly, they can’t showcase the actual wording – they might get sued! This one is my favourite… I’m sure I’ve seen it outside a fish n chip shop.

If you love listening to podcasts, have a listen to Building Your Brand by Liz Mosely. This episode featured Annie Atkins who’s a graphic designer. Annie creates graphics for movie sets and talks about her journey and learning how to do it. She now helps up-and-coming designers break into the industry. Such a great listen. As I mentioned, I’m one of those designers who spots things in movies or TV… I also love watching out for a bit of product placement… once on Emmerdale I think I saw a web browser called Poodle! LOL

Ok, my turn
…have I mentioned I’ve been a guest on Liz’s podcast too? But no movie chat for us. We talked about networking. It wasn’t the usual stuffy business networking that some of us fear, so don’t run away just yet! We talked about tips for when you do it in person or online. Hello Dolly
The movie phenomenon Barbie came out last year. How come people love this doll, her life and her friends so much? Well, the Design Museum in London has dedicated an entire exhibition to Barbie to tell us why. Can you believe she’s 65 years old? An interesting part of her evolution is how the ‘Barbieverse’ has changed and moved with the times. Especially. where they’ve introduced diversity and the everchanging Ken (all I see is Ryan Gosling dancing when I think of Ken). It’s open from now until February 2025.

FREELANCING

CoWork Club is a place where freelancers and small business owners get together once a month to… you guessed it, cowork. They also have a speaker and cake! What was the last film you watched? Or one you really enjoyed? I think mine was Rye Lane. A romcom based in Peckham South London, released last year. Or what was the best movie poster you’ve seen?

Also is it just me or you trying to work out what font is in the poster or movie credits.
We all know what this one in the poster is and the follow up movie. You’ve got to watch them!
