This is it people! The font you’ve been waiting for. I will say this only once…then the message will self-destruct. My latest client Mr I.Spy decided on this font for his latest brand project. Design by Christian Naths, its called Redacted. I love how the black contours come together to form the perfect block.

Perfect for my client’s line of work. And look at the script version. Don't you just love the seamless effort of the squiggles? Sublime. You can check out the full font family here

Ha ha, okay, April fools! I cracked up when this font was bought to my attention by Elizabeth Chesney during a Being Freelance co-work session.

So, onwards with the designery stuff you’re here for. Ten years ago, I designed a brand and logo for a client who was setting up a magazine called ‘blogosphere’. Bet you can’t guess what it was about? Yep, blogs. Who’d have thought it!

Fast-forward ten years, the online world has evolved and so has the magazine. I still work with Alice, we’re friends, and she asked me to work on her brand revamp.

Focusing on creators instead of just bloggers, it’s now called ‘b creator’. Alice wanted to keep the essence of blogosphere but move away from the font (Infinity) I originally used. After I put forward a few sketches and typeface selections, we settled on Remains. So, this newsletter is dedicated to the font:

FRIDAY FONT

I really liked the option on the left below for Alice’s new branding. I like how the ligatures in the c-r and the e-a join up; I feel it shows the idea of something being created and coming together.

The second image is the one that was chosen, keeping the b logo from the original design. What do you think? If you’d like to read more about the brand, here’s a link to Alice’s post.

Au revoir blogosphere, bonjour ‘b creator’! I still love the Infinity font I used for the masthead ten years ago. But onwards!

FONTS

Canva release Canva released new updates last week. As a professional designer, I’m meant to have a love-hate relationship with Canva…but I watched the keynote presentation. They’ve now powered with the typeface library Monotype to add more fonts to the platform. Canva’s getting better, and I love their ethics of donating 1% of profits to good causes. They also offer pro access free for educational organisations and non-profits. UX Designer Elizabeth wrote a great debrief blog on all the updates.

“Attention economy is booming” That line caught my eye while reading this Creative Bloq blog on 5 Nostalgic font trends for 2023. Fonts and graphics are apparently what people want to see more of on the scroll. Dunno what this says about me, but this one caught my eye by New Tropical Design Studio. Read more here

The ‘Hamster’ wheel of colour If you know me, you’ll know I love colour. Check out this very happy and colourful two-tone font by Fontwerks called Hamster. Love the promo vid they’ve created too! Trust me – you’ll get a little addicted to choosing colour combinations on this site. Plus, there’s a cute Hamster cursor.

DESIGNERY THINGS

Keeping it real! Nappy is a photo library featuring beautiful stock photos of brown and black people. I don’t like the site name as it has past cultural references, but that’s me. The library is a great resource if you’re looking for a diverse feel to your project or client work.

This won’t be tomorrow’s chip paper. A friend wanted to design something different for her dad’s 70th birthday present. I suggested making a magazine or a newspaper from Newspaper Club. How cool to create your very own publication! And you can order as many copies as you like for friends and family. Check them out.

I ❤️ NY - R.I.P. The world-famous iconic logo, designed by Milton Glaser, has been laid to rest and a new logo has risen from the sidewalks. What do you think? A rebrand exercise for publicity’s sake? A rebrand with no love? You can read more about it here. Plus, the hilarious Twitter comments: ‘Milton Glaser kerning in his grave’ (if you’re new to typography kerning is the spacing between letters).

In the words of Rihanna - 🎶 Just get ready fi work, work, work, work, work, work I’ve highlighted these co-working sessions before but now I’m officially on the co-host team at Freelancer Magazine. The sessions are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. It’s a great way to meet other freelancers and you get quality time to focus on your task. In fact, I’m writing this newsletter now in a session. I’m hosting on 4th and 20th April if you’d like to come and say hi on Zoom.

#FONTLOVEFRIDAY

Well, that was a busy month! I played mini golf with BFF’s, attended Digital Women Live conference in Birmingham and made the finals for the Digital Women Awards. Last year I won Graphic Designer of the Year. And this year, I’ve been nominated again for it – can I retain the title? ;)

I’m also up for Freelancer of the Year and I’m on the list of Digital Women to Watch. Feeling very blessed and honoured.
What work have I been up to… I designed a website, designed three magazines, created signs for an event in Dubai. Over 100 cups of teas were consumed. I also found a tin of Roses from Christmas - totally forgot I’d hidden them. They’re still in date… just! Don’t judge me, they aren’t green and aren’t moving 😉 But look at the tin. Love the retro 1950’s nostalgia feel, designed by Cath Kidston.
